Athletics for Rising 8th - 12th Grades

Participation in sports is intended solely for enrichment purposes. Official academic credit will not be awarded for participation in athletics unless otherwise specified. 


To participate in our athletic courses on the first day, you must present an Athletic Clearance Form signed by your physician to your coach; failure to do so will result in your inability to participate. For your convenience, a link to the Athletic Clearance Form is here. If you possess an existing Athletic Clearance Form that has not expired within the past year, it will be accepted. Please register your student in the grade they will enroll in for the 2026-27 school year.

 

**For Clarification: Current 7th Graders are called "Rising 8th Graders" as they approach their 8th grade academic year. Rising 9th Graders are current 8th Graders, Rising 10th Graders are current 9th Graders, and so on.

Advanced Dance 

Instructor: Tracy Shen 

Grades: 8-12

Fall Semester: June 8 to June 26, 2026

Days & Times: Monday through Friday, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Location: SMHS Room 604

Advanced Dance is a three-week course. Previous dance training and experience are necessary. This course requires a high level of technique and includes different dance styles such as ballet, lyrical, contemporary, jazz, and hip-hop. Dance is for enrichment only, and will not offer academic credit. The course will conclude with an informal showcase on the last day of class on Friday, June 26th. Incoming eighth grade students are welcome to take the course. (No Athletic Clearance required)

Boys Basketball

Location: SMHS Big Gym (JV & Varsity), SMHS Small Gym (Freshman)

Elevate your game this summer under the guidance of San Marino High School boys basketball staff and head varsity coach Mihail Papadopulos who brings 26 years of high school basketball experience--and a recent historic championship run. This summer course is for advanced players interested in playing basketball for the upcoming school season. Coach Papadopulos offers a comprehensive summer development program built for serious players who want to improve their individual fundamentals and master the team concepts necessary to succeed on the competitive court. The program consists of two parts: basketball workouts and strength workouts for Freshman, JV, and Varsity. Additional strength workouts days and times TBD.

Boys Soccer

Location: SMHS Softball Field

We will begin our soccer training to grow the San Marino High School soccer program as a whole. Over this time we will work on fundamentals, learning about the sport, cardio training, and even diet planning for our student athletes. We welcome everyone interested in joining the Boys Soccer program. Let's have fun this summer while we grow our love of the sport and push the future of San Marino Boys Soccer to the future!

Summer Camp for 2026 San Marino High School Cheer students only. Conditioning, stunting, and learning cheers will be conducted during camp. Schedule subject to change.

Cross Country Running (Fall only)

Fall Semester: June 8 to June 26, 2026

Days & Times: Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 7:45 am

Location: TBD

Cross Country Running is a course that will prepare student athletes for Fall competition in races ranging from 2-3 milies over grass, dirt, and asphalt. This course emphasizes advanced training techniques such as variable intensity and durations, interval training, and anaerobic training. Runners may join this session if they only plan to attend for the first three weeks of Summer Academy.

Football: Practice and Conditioning

Location: SMHS Softball Field & Weight Room

This summer course is for students preparing for or interested in joining the high school football program. We will focus on getting physically and mentally prepared for the upcoming season. Athletes will lift weights, condition, and train speed, agility, and movement in a structured and supervised setting. Emphasis is placed on proper technique, safety, effort, and consistency. This course also stresses teamwork, accountability, leadership, and taking pride in daily work. Athletes will learn how to train the right way, support their teammates, and build habits that carry over to the football season and beyond.

* There will be possible 7 on 7 games on certain days.*

Fundamentals of Badminton

Fall and Spring Semesters: June 8 to July 9, 2026 (**Course is only 5 weeks long**)

Days & Times: Monday through Thursday, 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Location: SMHS Small and Big Gym

This comprehensive badminton summer program is designed to develop and refine the skills of players of all levels, from beginners to those preparing for high school team tryouts. Participants will receive expert coaching in all aspects of the game, including: 

  • Fundamental Skills: Proper grip, serving techniques (high, low, flick), clear shots, drop shots, smash, net play, and drive shots. 
  • Footwork and Movement: Efficient court coverage, agility drills, and badminton-specific footwork patterns. 
  • Strategy and Tactics: Singles and doubles strategy, shot selection, positioning, and game analysis. 
  • Conditioning: Badminton-specific exercises to improve stamina, speed, and agility. 
  • Match Play: Opportunities to practice skills in simulated game situations and scrimmages. 
  • Observation Opportunities: Get the chance to watch and learn skills from current high school varsity players. 

This program is highly recommended for students planning to try out for the high school badminton team, as it will provide a significant advantage in skill development and conditioning.  

Requirements: Athletic attire, Badminton Racket, Non-marking athletic shoes, water bottle

Shuttlecocks provided for all participants.

Girls Basketball

Our Girls Basketball summer program is designed for any rising 9th through 12th grade girls who are interested in playing basketball during the upcoming school year. We welcome all skill levels, no experience necessary! Our summer season will consist of practices, weight lifting/conditioning, and games.

Tennis

Grades: 6-12

Fall and Spring Semesters: June 8 to July 17, 2026

Days & Times: Monday through Thursday, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Location: SMHS Tennis Courts

This class will be for Intermediate through Advanced Level, please NO BEGINNERS. If you can serve 8 consecutive serves, keep score and keep a rally of 10 consecutive hits over the net you are considered an Intermediate level player. Advanced level players will be separated into different groups. They work on match play, drills preparing them for matchplay, working on accuracy and strategy. Footwork is emphasized with utmost importance. In addition, we will be working on doubles play and volleys.

Volleyball (Fall)

Fall Semester: June 8 - June 26, 2026

Days & Times: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm

Weight Room: Wednesdays 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

An all-skill level course to help develop and/or maintain our athletes' volleyball skills through the summer/off-season. Areas of focus will include serving, passing, setting, and attacking at the fundamental and advanced levels. Here we will introduce certain strategies for both offense and defense to get us to an understanding of how live gameplay works. Throughout the course we’ll be able to incorporate mini games, scrimmages, and conditioning to get our athletes familiar with how the program works during the fall season. Our SMHS Volleyball summer course’s overall goal will be to help prepare those interested in trying out and playing in the upcoming fall 2026/2027 Girls Volleyball season. All grades 8 - 12 are welcome to participate in our Summer program.

Requirements: athletic indoor shoes, volleyball attire, water

Recommendations: knee pads, ankle braces, knee brace

Water Polo

Location: SMHS Pool

Calling everyone that loves to swim! Student-athletes enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to learn, exercise. and develop their water polo skills. The class is directed by certified USA Water Polo Coach Robert Zirovich and his staff. Returning athletes will have fun mastering shooting, passing, and wresting skills while developing their strategic quick thinking skills. All participants must be able to swim. Competitive club swimmers and water polo players are encouraged to attend.
